Name: Ilia Amitola
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: Post Season 6, episode 1
Age: 19-ish
Background: WIKI Post
Personality:
Ilia is a complicated person who has spent a lot of her life trying to find a place where she belonged and constantly seeking others to help validate her need to be do something, to have an effect on the world. She was raised by Faunus parents to hide herself because she was human-passing and they thought she could have a better life that way. And she did for a while, until they died and the girls she thought were her friends mocked and belittled their deaths because Faunus don’t matter to them. What Ilia had just lost didn’t matter. Like Faunus deserved to be mistreated, exploited, and killed in those mines with no care to their lives, families, or anything else about them. Ilia was so distraught; she couldn’t avoid her skin changing to reflect her grief and those “friends” turned on her quickly. This changed everything for Ilia.
She realized that she might be human-passing, but she would never be one of them. She didn’t want to be one of them. Why would she want to pretend to be human, with girls so vapid and self-centered and uncaring about the suffering of others for their own benefit? Why should she hide who she was to make friends with people who wouldn’t accept her as her true self? Was that really the life her parents wanted for her?
And thus, Ilia stopped trying to fit in with humans and instead embraced her Faunus-self. Sure, at times, she may vaguely use her passing to manipulate humans or get information, but she is proud to be a Faunus and refuses to deny who she is ever again. Faunus deserve respect and rights just as much as any human and she was going to fight for it. Therefore, Ilia joins up with the White Fang, a civil rights organization growing ever more aggressive and militant (to the point of terrorism). Because she sees that they are getting results. And after meeting Sienna and Adam, she can’t help but be swept up in their words of Faunus Rights and making humans take them seriously by any means necessary. She never wants to stand by while another Faunus dies like her parents did.
She’s made some mistakes along the way. A lot of mistakes, really. Falling in too deeply with Adam and letting herself be convinced that his way was the only way that would truly protect Faunus as Sienna’s aggressive, but limited tactics were not bringing about the changes she expected. Being the young, vulnerable, grieving person, she was, Ilia threw herself into White Fang wholeheartedly and let herself be groomed and manipulated by Adam into being one of his strongest supporters right alongside her best friend, Blake. Blake was really one of the only friends Ilia had and she ended up falling for her and became jealous because she wanted Blake to see her and recognize her what she was feeling, but Blake was so taken by Adam that it never mattered. It wasn’t going to go anywhere and she knew it.
Then Blake left and Ilia didn’t have anyone else she could turn to with her doubts and concerns. She was alone again, except for Adam, who was the only person she cared about who wasn’t dead or hadn’t abandoned her. Thus she told herself that Adam had to be right, that he hadn’t led her wrong before now and she had to trust he knew what he was doing, what they should be doing for the Faunus, even if this means secretly killing off Sienna so Adam can take her place leader of the White Fang.
Ilia was in constant search of someone to tell her what to do with her life, to give her a purpose that would fill that hole in her left by her parents (and later Blake). She needs to feel like she is making a difference. When Blake asked her why she was going along with Adam’s plan even though she obviously has doubts about them, she admitted the truth: She doesn’t know what else to do. They’d gone too far to turn back now, and if it failed everything she’d worked for, everything she’d done that Adam said was the right thing would be in vain. This is the path Adam gave her when she had nothing, when she was young and alone and in need of something. What else was she supposed to do if she didn’t have this?
But Blake doesn’t give up on her then. She may have left her before, leaving White Fang to go to Beacon, but this time she doesn’t. After seeing Blake keep reaching out to her, even though Ilia had been so intent on hurting her to get her out of the way for Adam’s plan, Ilia finally accepts that she can’t keep doing this. That maybe accepting she failed was the only way to find another path for herself. To not go back, but to take a fork in the road in another direction. Helping Blake and the other Faunus stop Adam and saved Haven Academy from being destroyed was only the start of it.
She doesn’t entirely believe that Blake’s pacifism is right, and that aggression and violence are never the answer to the bigotry and oppression Faunus face, but there has to be something in between that is less violent, not filled with death and destruction that Adam had presented as the only solution. Ghira’s new organization seems to be going in a right direction and Ilia wants to make sure of it. Ilia is never going to stop fighting for the Faunus, but she has to accept that in trying to save the Faunus, she’d also hurt them in ways that might be too terrible to be forgiven by some. And that was okay. Or not okay, but at least understandable. She deserved that. She could own that and move forward to prove to both the other Faunus and herself that whatever path she chose at least it was of her own making and following her own morals instead of other people telling her what to think and feel.
Powers:
Chameleon - every Faunus has a natural animal trait. For Ilia this is chameleon skin. She looks like a normal human (albeit with a lot of freckles), but she can shift the colors of her body to blend into her surroundings and camouflage herself. This is a mostly controlled ability, but extreme emotions also cause her to shift if she’s not trying to actively suppress the reaction.
Aura/Semblance - All people have Aura in Remnant. It is the spiritual energy from within themselves that can act as a protective armor around their body or be use more specifically by the person’s Semblance, which is a unique ability or manifestation of Aura that each person has. Ilia also has Aura and can use the Aura Shield, but because of her Chameleon ability she’s never needed to awaken her Semblance and it might take something serious that her chameleon ability cannot cope with to make it happen.
Training - Ilia is a trained fighter capable of performing extreme feats of athleticism including fighting while performing back flips, leaping from second floor balconies, running across staggered rooftops without falling, hand-to-hand combat, and also has skills with bomb-making and disarming. Most of these skills were used as a civil rights fighter turned terrorist.
Inventory:
Lightning Lash - Ilia’s weapon that works as both a blade and whip and uses Lightning Dust to shock people or shoot lightning bolts.
Dust Crate - a crate with a year’s worth of Dust canisters containing the four Basic Dust Colors (Red, Yellow, Blue and Green).
White Fang Mask - The mask Ilia wore while a member of the White Fang (unbroken)
